My principal impressions about Atlanta are thriving city with the green forest and cars. I am amazed how the city has been transformed from a small railroad hub and supply base in the 1830s to a metropolis in 2007. Above of all, Atlanta possesses no natural location advantages such as a site along navigable river or access to harbor like New York and Chicago. It also was not established as an administrative center. I believe that city of Atlanta's development was and is being accelerated by different means of transportation, which include railroad, streetcar, automobile, airplane and subway. I see Atlanta's growth in two distinct characteristics, heritage preservation from modern development and decentralization to suburbs.

According to my observation, most of late 19 th and early 20 th century residential neighborhoods such as Ansley Park, Virginia-Highland, Druid Hill and Inman Park and Midtown try to keep their built environments from unpleasant new structures. Their variety of architecture styles of houses from small craftsman style bungalows, Queen Ann two-story homes to Italian Renaissance mansions can be found throughout the areas. However, adaptive use of existing structures such as loft apartments at formerly Bass High school in Little Fives Point, new apartments, two and three story townhomes and single-family houses can describe the gentrification to these old communities. In the meantime, the committees of many old commercial districts have created their revitalization planning, which balance between the past and the future. The Integral Estate Group and Destiny Development are developing Sweet Auburn Village, which includes 150 residential rental units, office spaces, retails and restaurants.



Developers converted old and significant buildings in Downtown Atlanta to chic hotels such as the Glenn on Marietta Street and the Ellis on Peachtree Street. In Midtown Atlanta, the conception of living and working is implementing. It attracts new international architecture style such as high-rise hotel and condominium developments, located on Peachtree Road near 10 th Street, which surround three significant 19th-century buildings, the Tudor Revival Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, the Phelen Apartment and the Palmer Houses. The Atlantis Station, located on a formerly contaminated site, which was housed the old steel mill, is a new urbanism community with residential and commercial. It has an affordable, middle-income and up-scale housing including upscale shops, office buildings, the Twelve hotel, movie theatres, grocery stores and IKEA.

However, more development occurs along the interstate highways, especially I-75 and I-85. The Discover Mill, located on I-85 and 25 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta in Gwinnett County, is an example of new development. It was built in 2001 with 1.4 million square feet single structure of retails, theaters, and restaurants. New suburban neighborhoods, office complex and “big box” retailers have been built along main roads such as Satellite Boulevard and they could be reached by only automobile. In Buckhead, many hotels, condominiums and office building are under construction around the Lenox mall and on Peachtree Road, which its streetscape improvement including new light fixtures, street furniture and trees attracts more pedestrians. New luxury gated townhomes and condominiums on Lenox Road are replacing single-family homes that dominated the area. While new construction is growing up, many elite families enjoy living in elegant mansions with large front yards in the West Paces Ferry historic neighborhood as same as middle-class families of the early 19 th century Garden Hill community.

As Atlanta's economy continues to flourish, it attracts many immigrants from different ethnic groups, especially Latinos and Asians. Their restaurants, shops and rental apartments spread on both sides of Buford Highway as well as some existing single-family homes, which are being used for service businesses such as a chiropractic clinic, a lawyer office, a dental clinic and a tattoo shop. Unfortunately, the city's economy development also caused segregation and displaced many black residents throughout a city's history. In the race riot of 1906, most black-owned businesses as well as professionals fled the city's center, which was predominately white, and relocated their settlement along the eastern edge of the commercial core where today is known as Auburn Avenue. During the construction of the first Fulton County stadium and its parking lots before the Summer Olympic Games in 1996 has displaced many poor black residents of the Summerhill neighborhood

Finally, I would consider Atlanta as a technocity because it has been transformed by the coming of the technoburb. Robert Fishman has described the technoburb or new Edge Cities as city' peripheral zones that have emerged as viable socioeconomic units along highway growth corridors. These are where most of the new houses, jobs, and cultural centers are located.
